Getting Started

New to XMPP? Here's everything you need to start chatting in the next five minutes.

  • Never used XMPP before? Think of it like email, but for instant messaging - anyone on any XMPP server can message anyone on another, and no single company owns the network.
  • Start in your browser - no install needed. Click "Open Converse.js" below and you're chatting in seconds. Prefer a native app instead? Skip down to Mobile & Desktop Clients.
  • Create your account. Register right from the client's login screen with any username you like. A quick CAPTCHA keeps out spam (limited to 5 signups per hour per IP).
  • Your XMPP address works like an email address. Once registered, you're yourname@emeraldvalley.net - that's what you share so others can add you.
  • Add a contact. Enter their full address, e.g. friend@otherserver.tld - since servers federate, you can message people on other XMPP providers too, not just emeraldvalley.net.
  • Try a group chat (MUC). Join an existing room or create your own; message history is archived so you won't miss anything sent while you were away.
